Activists with the Latino Union of Chicago, Raise the Floor Alliance and other groups held a press conference Monday at City Hall calling on the City Council to fund a $500,000 pilot program to establish a “safe hiring site” for day laborers next year.

The site would be a specific location that would offer a waiting area for workers to connect with possible employers while protecting them from scams as well as immigration law enforcement.

“It would provide a structured and dignified alternative to waiting on street corners, replacing fear and uncertainty with organization, opportunity and hope,” said Miguel Alvelo-Rivera, executive director of Latino Union of Chicago.
